Review: Onell Design Outer Space Men Gemini Ulstriax - Fugitive from Algol

Onell Design Outer Space Men OSM Gemini Ulstriax - Fugitive from Algol Action FigureAs far as bang for the buck goes, the amount of parts in the Onell Design crossover OSM Gemini Ulstriax - Fugitive from Algol is pretty solid - and if you buy the matching companion Quallerran figure, it's even better. Not only is this a nicely decorated figure molded in light grey plastic, but Onell Design tossed in some bonus parts - dark red clear weapons of Orbitron are thrown in the bag at no extra charge. This is only the second heavily decorated version of Gemini out of a grand total of seven releases. The main, classic yellow one should be your first purchase and this Onell Design special edition should be your next stop.

Review: The Outer Space Men, LLC Outer Space Men Cosmic Radiation Cyclops Action Figure

The Outer Space Men, LLC Outer Space Men Cosmic Radiation Cyclops Action FigureSince its rebirth, it seems we're going to be getting a few new Outer Space Men figures like Cosmic Radiation Cyclops. A complete glow in the dark lineup has been teased, but not confirmed - so far this year alone, we've received 5 figures in glow plastic. Interestingly, the non-vintage characters haven't made the transition, nor have the first two years worth of character remakes - but teaser mock-ups make me think we can expect them all next year. I'm kind of glad they're working backwards, as these designs are a little more complex and fun as stand-alone figures... plus they're massive masses of glowing plastic.
For those keeping track at home, the first few Cyclops figures came out in 2012 with the painted one hitting in 2013. It was a gorgeous figure, and the final of four Cyclops figures until now. There's this one, and in January we're told the White Star version will also go on sale.

Review: Onell Design Glyos Noboto Ao

Onell Design Glyos Noboto Ao Action Figure27 total parts come in Noboto Ao. He might look like a familiar face - the color scheme and head deco recall a popular character from a comic book, TV show, movie, video game, and so on. But who? Well, it's Leonardo. There, I spoiled it for the none of you who didn't already figure this out. What's fascinating is that the figure is just a redecorated Noboto - an Onell Designs character which has been around for years. The generous slathering of pigment on a green body with added bonus grey weapons courtesy of the Robo Force molds completes the look, giving you the turtliest member of the Turtle Club yet.

Review: Spy Monkey Creations Battle Tribes DX Crimson Spikesaurian 2.0

Spy Monkey Creations Battle Tribes DX Crimson Spikesaurian 2.0 Action FigureI missed the first release, so it was nice to see that the second run of the DX Crimson Spikesaurian 2.0 was available and had arguably better deco - the shield has an added T-rex skull on it. With five accessories and six heads, there's a lot you can get out of a single figure - and you're charged accordingly.

Review: Onell Design Glyos Pheyden Frontier MKII

Onell Design Glyos Pheyden Frontier MKII Action FigureThe hero with many faces gets another face with Pheyden Frontier MKII. It's a pretty simple figure with extra deco - it's a Pheyden molded in white with thick paint on the legs, hands, and arms to replicate the molded plastic of the original figure that sold out ages ago. He doesn't have spare heads or anything, but it's a nice one nonetheless. It looks cool, which is a reason to buy it - the Onell Design crew came up with tons of great colorways back when they started, so it's nice to see them brought back for the newcomers or those who lacked the foresight to pick it up 8 years ago.

Review: Onell Design Glyos Crayboth Zekroyas

Onell Design Glyos Crayboth Zekroyas Action FigureThe trend to incorporate sidekick figures - or just apply the plastic and paint of one figure to another - is delightful. Crayboth Zekroyas is a tiny little crab guy, designed to match Alpha 7 Zekroyas [FOTD #1,535] from the same wave as well as a Quallerran, too.

Review: Bit Figs Mega Bit Pheyden Standard Set

Bit Figs Mega Bit Pheyden Standard Set Mini FigureI already bought one version of this mold, but a painted colorway of Mega Bit Pheyden - a Standard Set - seemed to be an essential purchase. (I'm also interested in a green "bad graphics" one and/or glow-in-the-dark someday.) Pheyden in Pheyden colors is an important thing to have, and this blocky one is nothing if not charming. If you got the Mega Bit Pheyden Trophy Set [FOTD #1,531] the figures offer little new other than changes in color, but they're good changes in color. In addition to these figures, an unpainted blue duo was also put up for sale.

Review: RawShark Studios The Order Bobaran Action Figure

The Order Bobaran Action FigureMade of aa couple of dozen parts, this figure is amazing if for no reason other than its color matching skills. The Order Bobaran's inspiration is baked in the colors, which RawShark Studios kingpin Jesse Moore somehow painstakingly matched or maybe he just blackmailed someone to get the Pantones perfect. It's based on the original mail-away (and retail) Kenner Boba Fett Star Wars action figures, a true classic and one of those things that's both an artifact of great mythological significance while oddly being a staple of millions of children's toy boxes almost 40 years ago. As an inspirational force behind Callgrim, it only makes sense that the character would be adapted to these original needs.

Review: Onell Design Glyos Gendrone Force Defender Villser Core

Onell Design Glyos Gendrone Force Defender Villser Core Action FigureOne of the things about Glyos that eventually gets to me is the names - I can't keep all of them straight. When I look at the Gendrone Force Defender Villser Core it impresses and delights me, while also terrifying me that I will never, ever remember what it is called. I think that has contributed to my lack-of-hardcoreness with the Glyos world as it goes on, mostly because there's so much great stuff, which I have bought and admire, but I can't actually talk about it without a crib sheet. It's a green take on the ToyFinity Robo Force mold, with some wonderful paint applicatins and a color that reacts in fun ways depending on how it's lit. It's also hefty, providing you with 41 pieces for $16.00 - and they're big pieces.

Review: Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Rhino - Flesh

Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Rhino - Flesh Action FiguresHey, it's a classic! I got the Rhino - Flesh a couple of years ago, and basically shot it and had him ready to review - I like to keep a few figures around for a while so I can look back on them and see how they turned out after a few years. Rise of the Beasts was a Kickstarter project that got funded, but due to some factory issues was pulled at the last possible minute - and later released, sans Kickstarter. Later, a second series went to Kickstarter - this did not get supported. In this time a grand total of 20 PVC figures were released, each of which had 4 points of articulation and was based on one of two sculpts. As is popular, they were eventually run in "flesh" plastic like the popular vintage M.U.S.C.L.E. line, which to this day remains one of the gold standards for collectible minifigures.

Review: Bit Figs Animal Series 1 Pup

Bit Figs Animal Series 1 Pup Mini FigureI bought a sack of animals and a sack of ninjas, and didn't complete either set. With the animals, I think there were some oddities. For example, Pup - the dog - came in unpainted orange and painted orange, as expected. He also came in grey, the cat color, with a pink nose. Well, I was surprised - but I like weird variants, and this was indeed a surprise as we're not entirely sure what all got made yet. In addition to all of these, the manufacturers sold gold figures direct to the consumer.

Review: The Outer Space Men, LLC Outer Space Men Cosmic Radiation Edition Colossus Rex Action Figure

The Outer Space Men, LLC Outer Space Men Cosmic Radiation Edition Colossus Rex Action FigureI would be a hack to say this figure deserves glowing reviews. I'll do it anyway. While the mock-ups for this Outer Space Men figure were painted white plastic, this glowing Cosmic Radiation Edition Colossus Rex is 5-inches-and-change of solid glow-in-the-dark plastic. If you collect these guys, you're probably wondering how the glow plastic of this convention exclusive (available this weekend in New York at NYCC) stacks up against other Glyos figures. I can say that the 2010 glow Metamorpho and the 2011 glow Electron+ are a little paler, a little more boney in color than this guy. Glow Rex is a near-perfect match to the many other Onell Design (and adjacent) glow Glyos figures like glow Gobon, Leyden, and many many others. They all vary a tiny bit, but it's superbly close.

Review: Onell Design Outer Space Men Alpha 7 Zekroyas

Onell Design Outer Space Men Alpha 7 Zekroyas Action FigureThe gap between the first and second The Outer Space Men Onell Design specials was five years. Five years. Thankfully Alpha 7 Zekroyas was only 3 months after the last one, bringing the man from the red planet back as a figure that's not only red, but has a unique color layout. It's not just a color-swap, but there are significant changes to where you'll find paint this time around. If you've been collecting this line for a while you may have six (or seven, if you dig variants) and more or less know what to expect. This is the first wholly original painted version to see release in quite some time, as the original Alpha 7 [FOTD #388] was based on a toy from the 1960s, and Alpha 11 [FOTD #744] was inspired of a contemporary - and ultimately unreleased - redeco. The Zekroyas version from Onell Design is a match for the Crayboth and Quallerran figures released at the same time, so they're siblings in a way. I'm super keen on figures painted like the Outer Space Men so I picked those up, too.

Review: Bit Figs Mega Bit Pheyden Trophy Set

Bit Figs Mega Bit Pheyden Trophy Set Mini FigureWhen I saw the first Bit Figs showing up on social media, I thought "Those are neat, but I'm sticking to this whole 'don't buy made-on-demand' kick." I already live in sort of a black hole of toy purchases. When I saw a plastic made-in-a-factory Mega Bit Pheyden Trophy Set was on sale - $10 for 2 figures, no less - I pounced. I love weird pixel things, and I love Glyos, so it's a good mix. (So far I've skipped Minecraft because boy howdy those things are pricey.) With a 2 3/4-inch and a 1-inch figure, made of 4 total chunks of plastic, I figured I should give these a whirl.

Review: Outer Space Men Cosmic Radiation Edition Gamma-X

The Outer Space Men, LLC Outer Space Men Cosmic Radiation Edition Gamma-X Action FigureWhen the announcement of new glowing "Cosmic Radiation" figures came up, I commented that these would be in addition to three existing glowing figures. I was told that the first Gamma-X [FOTD #939] didn't glow, but it does - just not very well. Regardless of the confusion, it's telling because it proves that Cosmic Radiation Edition Gamma-X 100% needed to exist. The original 2014 figure was a top-notch update of the original Colorforms prototype, matching the color and everything. It just didn't match the original action feature - that is, to glow in the dark. If you've bought both figures, you've got one that looks right and one that looks right, and this new 2016 convention exclusive is actually $1 cheaper than its dim-glowing counterpart. I'm not saying it's 100% better, but it's different enough that I think you've got reason to potentially buy both if you're so inclined.

Review: Outer Space Men Infinity Edition Colossus Rex 2.0 Action Figure

Four Horsemen Outer Space Men Infinity Edition Colossus Rex 2.0 Action FigureSince taking a nap in 2014, it seemed that the Outer Space Men toy line was done. Well, it seems that with Colossus Rex 2.0 the manufacturing duties are being handled by the licensors, rather than the Four Horsemen, although the original packaging templates and figure toolings are brought back to make a similar-but-different release. If you bought the 2014 original, good on you - it got expensive on eBay and Amazon if and when one showed up for sale. Based on some rough numbers at least 1,000 are estimated to exist of the original, and most fans ultimately just wanted the painted ones - so thankfully Gary Schaeffer brought this one back with a bluish deco variant. If you just want a painted Colossus Rex, either version of this 5-inch-and-change titan should be just fine for your shelves.

Crossposted from my Tumblr.

Reviews start next week - but these are new @bitfigs from Culture Pirates, SSM Vending, Onell Design, and presumably someone else.  I don’t know who.

The idea is that they’re (mostly) vending machine figures, so keep an eye open for these in other colors.  The top row shows animals, the bottom row shows ninjas.  Each one has a hole in the feet which is the size of a Glyos peg - good for staffs, alternate heads.  Each figure is about 1-inch tall and is unarticulated.
On the left are two (so far) online exclusive Bit Figs.  The big one is a large Pheyden with articulated arms that are removable and swappable with other @glyos pieces.  The little one is a little one.   Interestingly, the animals and ninjas are marked “GLYOS BIT FIGS″ - the only Glyos-family figures so far that I can recall that have any sort of markings - but Pheyden doesn’t.  He’s just this guy, you know?

Also confusing, today in Japan they announced Transformers Bit Figs and they’re something else entirely.

So far, I’ve counted (but have not personally seen and do not yet own) 62 different tiny Bit Figs from a grand total of 11 molds, plus the big one.  I’m contemplating a checklist thing.  I’ll be sorry if I do this, I just know it.

The only “wild” bit figs in vending machines have been 75 cents so far.   The Culture Pirates ones are roughly a buck a pop when bought in a bag.  I’ve already posted this review if Ninjas Ku in all 10 (known) vending colors if you’d like to see more.

If you want vehicles to go with them, so far Hot Wheels has a Minecraft Mine Cart.  (Review also coming at you next week.)   I’ve seen - I swear I’m not kidding - 10 different package variants of it so far.  Target is getting cases of solid Mine Carts with different artwork - but it’s the same cart, so far as I can tell.  A basic blue-carded cart also exists, with at least 2 different bubble variants.  (One slides back and forth, one does not.)  Because I’m not insane, I just bought one, and it’s a dollar, and it’ll fit most Bit Figs in addition to the smaller Mattel Minecraft figures.   If you’ve ever had the urge to send Pheyden or bunnies through Hot Wheels loops, now’s your chance.

A late update - most of them also fit nicely in the Tankinator car.

Onell Design - September Drop Wednesday

http://onelldesign.blogspot.com/2016/09/aasc-gitd.html
Speaking of glowing figures, Onell Design has AASC GITD on tap for Wednesday at 9:30 PM Eastern.  That's "Axis Armored Spectre Commandos" in glow in the dark plastic, and while no specific drop menu has been given there are expectations of at least one new head - and possibly other surprises - in the water.

New Outer Space Men Gamma-X Online Friday Night

The Star Trek Mission New York exclusive Cosmic Radiation Gamma-X will go on sale at 9:00 PM Eastern on Friday, September 9.   It's $25.00 at the show right now, and presumably on TheOuterSpaceMen.com as well.

It's a lot brighter than the original figure - as you can see, the one on the left (2014) was exposed to the same black light as the one on the right (2016).   Being cast in glow plastic makes all the difference, so if you're one of those people who specializes in glow Glyos you might want to set a timer for this one.

Review: Toy Pizza Knights of the Slice Integer Knight Action Figure

Toy Pizza Knights of the Slice Integer Knight Action FigureBecause of things like shipping, sometimes I drag my feet. We don't have any Hastings stores in Phoenix, so I didn't pick up the Knights of the Slice Integer Knight - my first of this line - until Comic-Con this year in San Diego. This was an exclusive to the We Love Fine booth, but you wouldn't know it to look at the booth - I just happened to be checking Tumblr before I went to work at the show, saw the post, and ran to go buy one right after. (I'm not exaggerating.) I'm glad I did - it's a wonderful figure! I'm now upset I didn't get the fully painted ones. It's not that this pink figure with blue armor is bad - far from it! - I just see how much better the decorated ones are now. I can definitely say this is one of those times I regret not having jumped on the Kickstarter a couple of years ago.

New Outer Space Men Friday Night - Colossus Rex 2.0

https://www.instagram.com/p/BJiRqfzjXtY/?taken-by=the_outer_space_men
They're back, again, Friday night!  In about 20 hours, you can get Colossus Rex 2.0 - the bluish variant.  Check it out on the Instagrams.

The official Outer Space Men account also teases a couple of other figures and word on them in 12 hours.  I'm all ears.   The guy to the right goes on sale Friday night at 9:00 PM Eastern.   Word has it he's $30 and if you saw the 1.0 version's going rate on eBay, $30 is quite a bargain.  (If you've followed inflation on toy manufacturing in China over the last few years, it ain't bad either.)

Anyway.  More are coming, this one's first, keep an eye on this space for more, don't ask why just buy buy buy, etc.

The Outer Space Men Continue - 3 new Figures by October

Crossposted from The Outer Space Men News:

The Outer Space Men are returning!  (Again!)   The last new wave of painted figures was a huge hit, with the 2 classic characters - Colossus Rex and Gamma X - selling so well that they will now cost you a lot of money.   (And that's assuming you can find them for sale.)

The fine folks behind the line are reissuing them with some improvements, along with a glow-in-the-dark Colossus Rex for the very first time. Gary Schaffer was kind enough to reach out with some details... and unrequested commentary added by yours truly.

Colossus Rex 2.0 - this will debut on the official Outer Space Men web site, and will also be sold at Star Trek Mission New York (September 2-4) and also New York Comic Con (October 6-9).  The figure is slightly closer in the rich color of the original Colorforms release 50 years ago, but includes gold - rather than purple - accessories.

If you missed the original figure, this is a much cheaper alternative to the secondary market.  If you didn't, it's different enough that you may wish to get one anyway.

Gamma X Cosmic Radiation - This will debut at Star Trek Mission New York (September 2-4).  The original Infinity Gamma X was covered in a light layer of glowing paint, which didn't glow fairly well.   It was colored similarly to the original prototype figure, but didn't glow well.  The new Cosmic Radiation edition is cast in glow plastic and looks like it will brighten the night.   It's a worthwhile upgrade.

Colossus Rex Cosmic Radiation - The New York Comic Con exclusive for The Outer Space Men will bow October 6-9.   This mock-up shows silver detailing added to the figure with silver accessories.  (Silver accessories were previously made available with the Ni Stuff handmade Galactic Holiday 2013 figures, and also as a set from the Four Horsemen Store.)

At press time the only figure we know will be sold online is Colossus Rex 2.0 - I'll post more as updates become available.
